Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Dear Faithful in Christ,

Glory to Jesus Christ!

We are pleased to announce that we will be sponsoring a Virtual National Byzantine Catholic Convention this Fall on the theme, “Growing a Vibrant Byzantine Church,” focusing on six key dimensions of parish life: Word, Worship, Charity, Unity, Mission and Leadership.

This convention will have two parts.

1.     Pre-Recorded Convention Presentations

There will be pre-recorded speaker presentations which will be made available beginning November 1. These presentations are from outstanding speakers on the topics of Word, Worship, Charity, Unity, Mission, and Leadership. Individuals, families, and parishes are encouraged to watch these 30-minute videos before the live event.

2.     Live Event Panel Discussions – Saturday, November 14th .

On Saturday, November 14, we will host a live event via Zoom with three panel discussions on the themes of:

·    “Growing in Word and Worship as a Byzantine Church”

·    “Growing in Charity and Unity as a Byzantine Church”

·    “Growing in Mission and Leadership as a Byzantine Church.”

All participants will have access to the recorded talks, panel discussions and catechetical resources for the full year.

We asking our priests, deacons, monastics, religious, and active laity to promote this event and encourage participation via the Zoom webinar platform. A link with information, promotional materials, and registration will be sent to you.

There is no charge for this event, but participants will have the opportunity to make donations to offset the cost. There will also be convention merchandise which will be made available for purchase prior to the live event. Registration for the Convention will begin September 14th and the link can be found at the Convention website: www.byzantineconvention.com.

Please plan to join us for our first National Byzantine Catholic Convention as a sui iuris (self-governing) Church to help us grow and revitalize our parishes and missions!

Liturgical Services and Events Cancelled 3/12-22

March 13, 2020 by Taylor Black

Glory to Jesus Christ!

My Beloved in Christ Jesus Our Lord,

As we are faced with this most unusual event, the spread of the novel Coronavirus, (COVID-19), we at St. John Chrysostom Parish must respond accordingly

It is with a very heavy heart, and much agony, that I must inform you that we are cancelling all weekend liturgical services and events. This will be in effect for the next two weekends, at which time it will be re-evaluated. This includes the Burlington Outreach. This cancelation is specific to our parish in Seattle only, not the rest of the Eparchy. St. George parish in Olympia also has been required to cancel liturgical services this weekend as well.

The Presanctified Liturgies at St. John’s for this Friday, March 13th and next week Wed/Fri March 18/20 are also cancelled.

Although our community is under the 250 people limit set by the State, we will not be able to meet their ‘social distancing requirement.’ You can read of this online at the Washington State website. With the size of our Temple, this is not possible, even if only half the people showed up. Based on the tremendous phone calls I have been receiving these past two days, we would be overwhelmed by Catholics from other parishes.

All parishioners of St. John Chrysostom Parish have received a dispensation for their required Sunday observance. However, I ask each of you to read the Sunday Epistle and Gospel readings and pray a desired set of Psalms together as a family. The readings can be found on your parish calendar.

The Divine Liturgy is live streamed at our Cathedral Parish of St. Stephen Cathedral in Phoenix, AZ, on Sunday’s at 10:00 a.m. Phoenix time.  https://stsbcc.org/media/live-stream

We are working on an alternative scenario, but have not yet finalized it.

Truly these are strange times, we should be able to come to church and pray during these difficult times, but that has been prohibited. So, let us keep one another in our prayers, stay faithful and steadfast. As Jesus says, “Be not afraid;” “fear is useless, what is needed is trust!” No one is exempt from praying, so pray, pray, pray! And please, a pray for me.

In Christ,

Fr. Michael Mandelas, Pastor

Growing in the Likeness of God – Eastern Spirituality in the Modern World

March 11, 2019 by Taylor

May 17-18th, St. Demetrios Hall, Seattle

Inaugural Lay Conference, “Growing in the Image and Likeness of God: Eastern Spirituality in the Modern World” featuring Fr. Stephen Freeman, Jonathan Pageau and Fr. Deacon Daniel Dozier.

FR STEPHEN FREEMAN (Archpriest, Author, Speaker)

– Image to Image: The Dynamics of Salvation
Created in the image of God, we move towards the image of God. Making sense of the dynamics of this movement is the heart of our tradition. Where have we come from? Where are we going?

– The Modern Challenge
There are unique problems within modern culture for the Eastern Christian tradition. Thinking through those problems creates a deeper understanding of the task of our faith.

JONATHAN PAGEAU (Artist, Author, Speaker)

– Rediscovering the Anthropology of Hesychasm Today
Beyond a coherent Christian mysticism, the Hesychastic tradition also offers a general anthropology, a vision and hierarchy of the human person which can give us a way to live in the world today.

– Sacred Art as the Only Hope for Reviving Culture
As we see the general degradation of cultural forms in Western culture, it is only a refocusing on the highest form of art which will bring us back from the Chasm.

FR DEACON DANIEL DOZIER (Deacon, Writer, Speaker)

– Image & Likeness: Developing a Biblical Worldview
Genesis 1:26-27 contains the phrase “image and likeness” in reference to God’s creation of humanity. This talk will explore the biblical and contextual meaning of this phrase and its implications for an authentic Christian spiritual life. We’ll examine both the narrative and cultural context of Genesis and what these together actually communicate about our nature and potential as human persons in our relationship with God, humanity and creation.

This will be a fantastic opportunity to gather with fellow Christians and great speakers to be enriched by the great gift of Eastern Christian Spirituality and how it offers answers to the challenges of modernity. This conference is not academic in focus. It is our sincere hope this event will assist all Christians seeking to deepen their spiritual life to grow in the Image and Likeness of God!
